vitamins/herb for pregnancy

Question
I am trying to conceive. Could you kindly suggest some important vitamins/herbs that I should take? Thank you very much.

Answer
Hello,

I just have a few questions: Is this your first attempt at trying to conceive? Or do you have a history of infertility?

There are a few things you can do that are general for each circumstance.

1) It is never too early to start taking a prenatal vitamin.  Find a good whole food vitamin like New Chapter's Perfect Prenatal.  I'd start by taking just a half a pill 2xday.

2)Start eating healthy, nourishing foods.  Increase foods such as yellow mung beans, lentils, beets, and even lean red meat (Bison is best). These foods increase blood supply and are very nourishing. Also add leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, mustard greens (all cooked). these foods are high in folic acid and B vitamins which are great during conception time and early pregnancy and help prevent birth defects.

4) Avoid processed foods that contain hydrogenated oils or partially-hydrogenated oils.  Avoid Soy products, white flour, white sugar, coffee, and sodas.  Also, if you know you have a food sensativity to things like dairy products, corn or gluten, now would be the time to stop, because continuing to eat these foods while pregnant may pass the allergen on to your baby or lead to complication in breastfeeding.

5)Add herbal teas that contain Rosemary, Raspberry leaf, dandelion root, and Red Clover flower.  Raspberry leaf is a great uterine tonic that is safe and beneficial to take all the way through your healthy pregnancy.  Dandelion root works on the liver, moving the Qi energy and helping to avoid miscarriages.  Red Clover Flower is a very powerful fertility herb that nourishes the Yin (mother) energy. And Rosemary works by helping the body get rid of any negative emotion surrounding pregnancy and strengthens the immune system.

6) And of course, now is the time to quite smoking, drinking and check with your doctor about removing any prescription drugs including antibiotics from your regime.

I wrote a brochure called "Oh Baby! Herbs for Pregnancy" on my website.  You can download it here  http://www.phxherbs4kids.com/home-remedies.html

Good luck with your journey and let me know if you have any other questions.

Peace and Blessings,

Dr. Candice

Dogs coughing

Question
My Dog has been coughing for about 9 months now.

X-rays showed white tissue around lung slightly larger at top of lung.  She was put on anti-flamitories, anti-biotics and very small cough pills which helped only if she remained on it. I was told that the swab taken from the lung after this had lots of good  samples for testing but came back as no more that what would be a chronic bronchitis or allergy.  Now they want to put her on a steroid.

My Jack Russell is coming 17 and in good shape other that her bad cough which is dragging her down.  I am wondering if it would help her if I sprinkled this mixture of mullein, uva ursi and coltsfoot on her food in the crushed leaf form.

I have been into herbs for years and tried comfrey leaves and pro vex (a grape seed mix)but this has not stopped the cough either.

I even give her Goji juice in her food.

Thank you for your time.

Liz

Answer
Morning Liz,

Sure, I would give this a try, Mullein and Coltsfoot are especially good treatments for chronic coughs.

Several chemicals in Ginger (ginerols and shogaols) have been shown in studies using laboratory animals to have cough-suppressing, pain-relieving and fever-reducing action. You might also add this to your formula.

Licorice, Slippery Elm, Anise, and Primrose leaves are good choices.

I would try these treatments before the lingering side-effects of steroids.

Best wishes,

Dennis

sea kelp supplementation

Question
QUESTION: I have been taking  different supplements recommended by a fitness trainer for detoxing.  He tested my PH and said that it was 5.9 and that I had 3 liters of toxic stuff to get rid of.  What I have been taking is series of supplements all containing kelp.  I take different supplements each month.  The one I am taking now contains the following: Propriety blend of Kelp (finasco);Laminaria Kelp extract; dentrtella Asiatic Extract; Ble green algae (spirulina).  Each capsule has 248mg of this blend and I was told to take 2 per day.  I also take a multiviatamin from Dr. Weil with 150 mcg of iodine from kelp in it.  I started reading on Kelp and found that too much iodine can cause thyroid problems.  Is this too much?  As I said the supplements change for each of 3 months but all have kelp.  How much kepl is too much.  I am 54 years old.  Thank you for your help.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Kelp is a sea vegetable. I wouldn't worry about it , I tell client s to take quite and bit .  It's fine. It's all natural and completely assimilated easily.  Jayne

QUESTION: Thank you very much for your answer to the above question.Could you please tell me if there are guidelines as to how much kelp or iodine is too much in a person without thyroid problems? Is there a problem with mercury with kelp?  Is spirulina a form of kelp?

Answer
Spirilina is not kelp. I know of no guidelines but have suggested to some cilents who muscle test for kelp to take as many as 9 a day for 9 days then 8 a day for 8 days and so on until then maintain on 4 a day. It is a vegetable and the iodine is a safe form of this mineral and not to worry. Jayne

What can valerian root be mixed with/not mixed with?

Question
Hi,

I am a 22 year old female, who is trying to take a natural approach to mild anxiety, and gaining a healthy stance on my immune system.

I have been taking daily: B12 - (500mg) DHEA - (25mg)

I have also been taking an iron suppliment every other day (I am anemic and also do not have a spleen) 65mg.

I have read reviews on valerian root as a natural approach to relax your body for a more peaceful sleep. I have not been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, but tend to find some nights waking up in the middle of a panic attack. I was recently hospitalized with a heart rate above 140, and trouble breathing. they tested my heart on everything, and everything came back completely normal, so they said I might just have some anxiety issues.

I bought some valerian root the other day and took 1 capsule last nighht (400mg) and had a wonderful nights sleep.

Can I take all of the above in oone day?? I am not sure if i can mix those daily vitamins and a valerian root together...I have tried researching, but have yet to come up with anything. plus, if there is any other herbs you would recommend that might help, please let me know. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Alllison,

Yes, you can take all of the above in one day. I would use a B-complex vitamin instead of the B-12.

I would also suggest 1,000 mg of calcium and 600 mg of magnesium daily. They are natural tranquilizers.

I would use Milk Thistle (500 mg) daily to neutralize free radicals which increase under stress.

Rotate the Valerian root with Skullcap every 30 days. Take before bedtime.

Other herbs to help you relax and can be taken during day as a cup of tea are Catnip, Linden Flower, Motherwort, and Passion Flower.

Happy to hear you slept so well after just one night of taking Valerian root.

Best wishes,

Dennis

QUESTION: Dennis,

thank you so much for the quick response. I took all of the ones I told you about, including the valerian root, and this morning at 6am woke up and my heart was beating hard (in normal range, around 90) and i felt like i couldnt catch my breath. It was a rough day for me at work because it kept coming back...is there anything that I can take during the day that wont knock me out that will help relax me and help with stress and anxiety??

Allison

Answer
Hi Allison,

Yes, take the teas I mentioned before. Catnip, Linden Flower, Motherwort, and Passion Flower. Rotate these, drink one-two cups during the day. Motherwort has the added benefit of helping to strengthen your heart muscle.

Also take the other supplements to help control your anxiety. Stress causes free radicals to increase in your body, so take the Milk Thistle to help combat this.

Include in your diet apricots, asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, brown rice, dried fruits, figs, fish (especially salmon), garlic, green leafy vegetables, legumes, raw nuts and seeds, soy products, whole grains, and yogurt. These foods supply valuable minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and potassium, which are depleted by stress.

Limit your intake of animal protein. Concentrate on meals high in complex carbohydrates and vegetable protein.

Avoid foods containing refined sugar or simple carbohydrates. Do not consume coffee, black tea, cola, chocolate, or anything else that contains caffeine.

Try these suggestion, Allison. They should help.

Extended use of Green Drinks and Herbs.

Question
Hello,

I am 19 years old and have taken a pro-active approach to my health. I am taking a Green drink product (Paradise Herbs ORAC Energy Greens), a 500mg (standardized 95%) Green Yea extract, and 500mg of Olive leaf extract (15% Oleuropein) (twice daily), as well a mushroom blend (Madre Labs Immune Punch). Besides this, I make sure I get lots of vegetables and fruits in my diet. Questions:

1) Is there anything else I should for better health?

2) Does taking these products everyday loss there effectiveness?

Thanks,

Answer
Hi Ramon,

I would dump the Olive leaf extract and replace it with Milk Thistle for a very effective antioxidant, it is such a liver protector, use 500 mg daily. It is a wonder herb.

The green tea and mushrooms are wonderful, keep it up.

Best wishes,

Dennis
