Back Pain

Question
: I am 43 yrs working as a office manager. I have been facing problem with low back pain, it also causes nerve pinching on my leg. I did an MRI scan on 15 January 2010) and here is the extract for the report.

....THE images are obtained according to the usual protocol which reveals.  Normal size and signal intensity of all vertebral bodies.  Disc dehydration at L4-L5 %26 L5-S1 are noted as evidenced by decreased signal intensity in T2 weighted images.  A Rt. Para central disc herniation with inferior migration is demonstrated at the level of L4-L5 with pressure effect on the Rt. side of the thecal sac and never root.  Visualized part of the distal cord appear intact.  No intra dural S.O. L. is seen.   Surrounding soft tissue structures are normal.

--I consulted a doctor who told me to do exercise on daily basis. However I am still facing problem with back pain and nerve pinching. Could you please suggest what would be the best option for me. Is there a way to get rid of this problem without surgery?

Thanks.

Answer
Some of these cases can respond to conservative care.  I would see a chiropractor in your area that does physical therapy/rehab in their office.  Make sure to call and ask first.  Traction, flexion-distraction, or decompression, might all be options to try.  You should watch for warning signs of muscle weakness or if numbness/tingling in the legs starts getting worse, you need to go see someone immediately.
