Question
i have just made some comfrey oil, with a double boiler i simmered some comfrey & oil for 3 hours. then i came up with the marvellous (or maybe not so marvellous) idea to puree the oily comfrey left over after straining it with some aqueous cream & aloe vera body lotion both supermarket bought (sorry). Well after a while it started to froth up or ferment is that a problem?
I made another batch of comfrey oil by just cutting it up & putting it in a jar filled with oil witch I am leaving to steep for 3 months before straining. every so often I poke it around with a chopstick to remove any air bubbles traped in the oil, there still seems to be a lot of air in it, is it possible that that has also started to ferment, if so is that a problem?
Answer
Hi Tony,
I would not recommend mixing herbal formulations with commercial creams. Also three month is a long time to steep oil based formulas. It is bound to ferment or spoil.
Try this ancient Egyptian recipe.
* 6 ounces of Olive Oil
* 1/2 ounce comfrey leaves
* label
* clear jar
* cheese cloth
* 1 400 I.U. Vitamin E Capsule
This oil is going to make a heavy texture. It is designed to lubricate the skin, and has the healing ability to deeply penetrate into the areas that need healing.
Olive oil is a strong oil and has outstanding mystical properties. It has been used for centuries and is still used extensively in Europe and Asia.
In a clear jar combine the 1/2 ounce of bruised comfrey leaves and the 6 ounces of olive oil. It would be helpful if you bruised the leaves in a Mortar and Pestle to help them release their power. Mixed them around and set them in the sun for a few days. Remove the leaves by carefully pouring you oil blend through the cheese cloth. Squeeze out the cheese cloth and throw it away. Let your oil settle and you are ready to use.
*Note. If you are in an area (like Great Britain), with no measurable sunshine, use your double broiler method, Tony. Heating it through several times over two-three days.
I find it handy if I put my oil in a convenient type bottle. If you leave it in a quart jar, you probably won't use it as often.
***DON'T FORGET to add one 400 I.U. Vitamin E cap to the oil to preserve it. Also label your oil.
Give this a try. Herbal formulas are fun to make and very healing.
Best wishes,
Dennis
