Question
Hi Doc
I have a lot of mental energy and find it hard to relax at night- i.e. I cant watch TV for five minutes without getting up to check the computer?
I run on a treadmill which helps.
I DO have adult A.D.D. and I take welbutrin for that, but I am looking for a herb/supplement food? that could help?
Thanks!
Answer
Hello Bud,
thanks for your question. in order to get good quality sleep, start with sleep hygiene. this would include
getting enough sleep (7-8 hours for most people)
making sure the bedroom is a place that is only used for activities like sleep, sex, listening to relaxing music, and quiet reading. No TVs, computers, phones, video games are recommened to be in this space, & should be avoided for 30-60 minutes before trying to get to sleep.
a neutral, slightly warm bath 45 minutes before bed
deep breathing or meditation exercise before bed
avoid food & drinks for several hours before bed & stimulants (caffeine, nicotine, some medications) for 4 or more hours before bed
exercise & light exposure during the day, ideally in the morning to help reset your internal clock
supplements like magnesium or herbs like valerian, chamomile, hops, lemon balm, kava kava, catnip, passionflower, & lavendar, as capsules or an alcohol-based tincture (avoid teas will increase urination & interfere with sleep)
aromatherapy diffuser with oils like rose, lavendar, jasmine in the bedroom
I hope that gives you some ideas to start with. for more individual guidance consider consulting an herbalist or naturopath in your area.
in health,
dr conner
