Question
I have been ttc for almost a year and missed my period for a cuople of times. The doc put me on provera to bring on my period and it was fine. Then from 2009 october my period started to be normal within a range of 28-34 days. But the problem I have now is PMS..It is becoming worse month by month.I have constant lower back pain, tender breast, nausea, irritability, low sex drive immediately after ovulation and ends till my period shows up.I guess I ovulate every month as I'm charting my bbt and it shows a temperature rise after ovulation. Therefore I suspect some kind of estrogen dominance. This PMS is killing me and it's hindering my everyday life.I wanted to try Vitex to regulate my period,PMS and to get pregnant. Will Vitex help me or any other herb?If so can you suggest me the dosage. And what to continue to keep my progestrone levels high if at all I concieve using vitex.I know vitex should be discontinued once you are pregnant.I have heard about natural progesterone creams too. Will that help?or fish oil.
Please help!!!any answers appreciated. Thanks in advance doc.
Answer
Hello Saasha,
Vitex is often helpful in cases of PMS and irregular periods, which often helps in getting pregnant. It has some progesterone-like effects but like all herbs has wider applications also. Dosage is determined by what other treatments you are doing as well any additional health concerns; so it's difficult to say what might be optimal for your needs. You also want to look at reasons for the PMS-- it's really an indicator of overall hormonal health rather than a condition itself. There are often underlying conditions with menstrual complaints, which may need to be addressed. Herbs as well as diet and lifestyle changes are most supportive for hormone balance, and when a complete approach is used it often leads to full resolution. What I would suggest is that you seek out some individual guidance for your concerns with a ND, holistic MD, or herbalist in your area. While herbs are often safer than medications, they are not fail safe, especially when you are dealing with the endocrine system which is more complex than just treating a minor condition like a cold. It is likely a natural approach will be helpful for you but does require some more individual assessment & specific guidance.
