Morning Sickness & Heartburn

Question
What do you suggest using for morning sickness/nausea & heartburn. I can't do Apple Cider Vinegar because the smell of it makes me even more sick. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Answer
Hello Shannon,

Congratulations on your new little one growing inside of you.  There are lots of things you can do to help with morning sickness and other digestive disorders during pregnancy.  I wrote some simple home remedies for this issue in a pamphlet called "Oh Baby! Herbs for pregnancy!" on my website.  You can find it here  http://www.phxherbs4kids.com/home-remedies.html

Some things to keep in mind that can help are:

Eating when you first get up.  Salt crackers are good.  Salt has a natural downward energy and can get rid of that rising sense of nausea and stomach acid.

Drink Ginger and Fennel Tea.  Ginger and Fennel have been known for centuries to help ease digestive discomfort. Ginger works similar to apple cider vinegar to help nausea.  You can buy dry roasted fennel seeds and chew them when ever you feel nauseated.

Alfalfa tea and Papaya fruit are really the best things to help with Heartburn, if you don't want to take the occasional TUMS.

On that note, Yoga is helpful for heart burn caused by a growing baby in the 3rd trimester.  A great pose for this is the cat pose.  Get down on all 4s (hands and knees) like you were crawling.  Gently tuck your tummy into your body, rounding the back, with your chin tucked to your chest. Breath.  Release the tuck and gently arch your back, lengthening your spin and lifting your head up, shoulders down away from the ears.  Breath.  Repeat this gentle rocking back and forth for a few times.  Stop if it is uncomfortable.  This is a good exercise to help create space between your digestive system and your baby.

Peace and Blessings to you and your birthing journey.

Cheers,

Dr. C
